Background: Short-term effect of local steroid injection for carpal tunnel syndrome is well known, but its long-term effect is controversial. So I tried to reveal the long-term effect of local steroid injection for carpal tunnel syndrome.
Method: I performed local steroid injection into the carpal tunnel in 21 patients(36 hands) with confirmed carpal tunnel syndrome by nerve conduction study. And I performed the nerve conduction study of median nerve about 2 weeks after injection. The mean of follow-up duration was 2 months, and the mean of the number of injection was 2 times.
Results: Most of the conduction parameters of median nerve at the wrist revealed significant improvement after local steroid injection. The subjective symptom reported by patients was also significantly reduced after injection. But the improvements of conduction parameters was not related to the number of injection.
Conclusion: Local steroid injection into the carpal tunnel may be effective to the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome for longer duration.
